Campfire church is prayerfully born from the need to reach out to people who wish to explore faith in Jesus in a setting which is a level space. Surrounded by nature, people often find barriers broken down in this environment, and for some the call of God is easier to recognise; this can be especially true for those who have suffered trauma in their lives. Through this ministry a worshipful space can be offered for those who wish to come back to faith or explore following Jesus for the first time. All set in a peaceful environment with both Christian teaching and space to talk around the campfire. Sometimes there might be a set liturgy, on other occsassions simply an opportunity to sing and worship together and discuss the scriptures and our own journeys of faith.
So far I have run camp fire church in a number of settings, within my own baptist church at a scout centre on an away day, with youth in a back garden, on some land as part of a pentecost service with a BBQ, and in an urban setting in Edinburgh with a mission group of church planters with a fire pit in the church back yard.
It works! the liturgy needs to be kept light, there are certain useful elements I have found work well.
Singing a few well know hymns around the camp fire
Short teaching time, but longer reflection / sharing / feedback time
Consider breaking up into small groups for reflection when numbers are above eight.
Be flexible, or have a plan B, the weather can be unpredictable!
With large group and open prayer times, limit the prayers if needed by saying something like ‘five prayers and then we’re done’.
Always have a time of silence
As facilitator, be willing to change things around as you feel led. e.g. an impromptu hymn, scripture, etc. from you or another.
